Housed at St. Helena College and Career Academy, our Maker Space fosters innovation through hands-on experimentation. Participants can be creative and apply personalized learning strategies to change existing concepts or develop their own ideas, methods, or products. Maker Spaces are designated areas that encourage students to explore, design, experiment, and build. They are able to take items apart, put things together, and dream of imaginative creations. The notion of multiple attempts, refining designs, and failure is inherent in engaging students to take risks.
Through making, students of varying abilities learn and develop new skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Maker Spaces provide a catalyst for all students to strengthen these skills, which can lead to success in other areas of school, work, and life. The St. Helena Parish School District, in partnership with the Family Resource Group, proudly introduces its Literacy Learning Lab—an innovative, learner-centered space designed to bring literacy to life. At the heart of the lab is a large tree with seating around it, symbolizing growth and serving as the central gathering place for collaboration and reading.
The space, housed at St. Helena Early Learning Center, features two interactive kiosks equipped with literacy apps, a wall-sized Scrabble board, and engaging wall games that promote vocabulary, critical thinking, and teamwork. A cozy reading corner encourages independent reading, while a Poetry Slam mini-stage provides students with a platform to express themselves and build confidence through spoken word.
