Safe Schools Grant

St. Helena College and Career Academy Awarded Security Grant

St. Helena Parish, LA – We are delighted to announce that St. Helena College and Career Academy has been awarded the Schools & Nonprofit Security Grant for the fiscal year 2024. This grant, provided by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) in collaboration with the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools (LCSS), will fund a school resource officer for one year.

The addition of a school resource officer is a significant step in enhancing the safety and security of our learners, staff, and community. The officer will be responsible for maintaining a secure campus environment, addressing safety concerns, and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the school community.

“This grant is a vital resource for ensuring the safety of our learners and staff,” said Kelli Joseph, Superintendent of St. Helena Parish School District. “Having a dedicated school resource officer on campus will not only improve security but also provide a sense of safety and support for our entire school community.”

The school resource officer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:

- Enhancing Campus Security: By monitoring the campus and addressing potential security threats, the officer will help maintain a safe learning environment.

- Crisis Preparedness and Response: The officer will be trained to handle emergency situations, ensuring swift and effective responses to any incidents.

- Building Positive Relationships: Acting as a liaison between the school and law enforcement, the officer will engage with learners, staff, and parents to build trust and promote a culture of safety and respect.

- Educational Programs: The officer will conduct educational sessions on topics such as safety protocols, bullying prevention, and substance abuse awareness.

The grant reflects a strong commitment from GOHSEP and LCSS to prioritize the safety of educational institutions and support the well-being of learners and staff. The St. Helena Parish School District is grateful for this generous award and looks forward to the positive impact it will have on the St. Helena College and Career Academy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to GOHSEP, LCSS, and all those involved in the grant process for recognizing the importance of school safety and providing the necessary resources to enhance it. This funding will undoubtedly contribute to creating a secure and nurturing environment where our high schoolers can thrive academically and personally.
